Criteria for Successful Implementation
In order for a case to be successful, the following criteria should be met according to Freeman Herreid, Schiller, Herreid & Wright (2012):
Some other general qualities that this instructional strategy should incorporate are:
- the case must tell a story
- interest arousing
- idea/scenario must be recent (ideally no more than 5 years)
- creates empathy for character(s) in case
- includes quotations and dialogue
- relevant to the participants
- have a pedagogical purpose
- conflict provoking
- forces decisions to be made
- has generality
Some other general qualities that this instructional strategy should incorporate are:
- open ended questions
- preparedness on the part of the facilitator as well as the participants
- a level of trust within the group
- the use of visuals
“In almost all methods of case-study teaching there is a common approach. The
instructor must have his/her objectives clearly in mind, must structure the
presentation to develop the analytical skills of the students, and must be sure that
student participation is maximized” (Freeman Herreid, 1994, p. 227)
